I started by designing a spreadsheet into which I could enter numerous types of income and tax reliefs . I then took that information and added the relevant formulae to calculate a figure of overall tax liability . This was more complex than I had first imagined because investment income is charged at a different rate to other incomes and certain tax reliefs relieve tax at different rates . Additionally , due to the differing tax rates i.e. 40% , 23% and 20% simply adding , subtracting and multiplying is not enough , in fact numerous comparisons also have to be made . Having calculated the overall liability I then added the relevant formulae to calculate the various elements of the tax code or codes. I then added a checking device to show that the tax collected through the tax code(s) was in fact equal to the tax due.
Finally after thoroughly testing the spreadsheet for errors and accuracy , I then incorporated into the spreadsheet , user instructions and prompts to provide user friendliness and simplistic use . The spreadsheet , having been approved by our Customer Service Team is now used constantly throughout the office and has led to a significant amount of time being saved . Additionally , the use of the spreadsheet has enabled both myself and my colleagues to achieve greater accuracy in our work.
